The Royal Entomological Society publishes seven high-quality, international scientific journals covering all aspects of entomology. Agricultural and Forest Entomology, Ecological Entomology and Physiological Entomology are inviting applicants to join their international editorial boards of Associate Editors. Associate Editors play a key role in the evaluation of scientific and editorial content of submitted manuscripts and timely management of the peer review process. Associate Editors typically handle approximately 4 – 10 manuscripts per year (depending on the specific subject area and submission rates). We credit the valuable work of Associate Editors by including their name on the published version of each paper they handle through to acceptance.

The scope of each of these journals is below:

Agricultural and Forest Entomology is a multidisciplinary international with an audience of researchers, policymakers and professionals.

Our journal covers a wide range of topics, including research on insect pests, pollinators, and natural enemies in managed forests and agroecosystems. We welcome papers on biology, behaviour, population dynamics, impact, and management of pests in various production systems. Submissions on techniques for pest management, studies on insect communities, and the influence of management practices are encouraged.

Ecological Entomology is a leading journal focusing on original research concerning insects and related invertebrates’ ecology.

Aimed at ecologists driven by ecological or evolutionary theory, we prioritize innovative contributions testing specific hypotheses. Our journal publishes full-length Original Articles, Reviews, Short Communications, and Methods papers, all intended to advance the field of ecological entomology. Manuscript assessment typically occurs within 5 days, while review articles require prior Editor contact.

Physiological Entomology is a distinguished Royal Entomological Society journal with a unique focus on insects and arthropods, investigating their functioning and adaptations using experimental methods.

Our papers address any area of insect physiology and provide valuable insights into how insects cope with their biotic and abiotic environments. Emphasizing physiological and experimental approaches, we publish research that fosters a deeper understanding of basic insect biology, the link between genotype and phenotype, and how insects adapt to environmental change.

The Editors-in-Chief of each journal welcome applications from researchers with expertise in any area of their scope but applicants with the following expertise would be particularly welcome:

Agricultural and Forest Entomology:

We are seeking researchers with enthusiasm for a range of topics within agricultural and/or forest entomology to work with the Editors-in-Chief to uphold Agricultural and Forest Entomology’s excellent standard of publishing. You will be supported by the EiC team and you will have opportunities to contribute toward wider journal strategy and development.

We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants in the following areas of expertise:

  • Soil entomology
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Parasitoids
  • Genomics
  • Population genetics
  • Other topics within the broad remit of agricultural and forest entomology

Ecological Entomology:

The Editors are keen to receive applicants from researchers comfortable handling papers on a broad range of topics. You will receive support in doing this from the EiC team.

We are keen to see applicants with expertise in the following:

  • community ecology
  • plant-insect interactions
  • predation/natural enemies, food webs, trophic interactions
  • dispersal, metapopulations
  • bee biology
  • pollination ecology
  • soils, decomposition, carrion
  • chemical ecology, plant defenses
  • ecological networks
  • endosymbionts, microbiome, symbiotic interactions
  • thermal ecology
  • nutritional ecology
  • communication, sexual selection

Physiological Entomology:

We are keen to see applicants with expertise in the following:

  • biomechanics
  • (functional) morphology
  • nutrition
  • immunology
  • sensory physiology
  • seasonality
  • diapause
  • photoperiodism

We are seeking applicants working within the scope of our journals to join our international teams of Associate Editors. Associate Editors play a key role in the timely handling of manuscripts through peer review and in raising the profile of our journals.

About you

This is a voluntary role with some financial support available to cover registration for our annual conference Ento, and for other journal advocacy work.

We are happy to ensure that you have breaks in Associate Editor duties for fieldwork or other commitments.

We welcome all applications that meet the following essential criteria:

  • Active record of publication in peer reviewed journals in a topic within the scope of the journal you are applying to
  • Experience reviewing papers in a relevant field
  • Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity in scientific publishing

RES journals are committed to increasing the scientific, geographic, and human diversity of our editorial team. Therefore, we specifically encourage applications from underrepresented groups, including:

  • Indigenous researchers
  • Researchers from non-English speaking countries
  • Experts working in government and non-profit organisations relevant to their field
  • Women and LGBTQI+ people

To apply

Please submit a short CV (less than 3 pages), evidence of your publication record, and a brief cover letter (less than 1 page) outlining your interest in the role. Please tell us why you want to join the journal team and how you will benefit from the role.
