Nominate an Outstanding Entomologist for Honorary Fellowship

The Royal Entomological Society invites Members and Fellows to submit their nominations for Honorary Fellowships Hon.FRES).

Honorary Fellowship is the highest honour bestowed by the Society, awarded for exceptional lifetime achievement in insect science or outstanding services to the Royal Entomological Society and wider entomological community. Honorary Fellowship recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to entomology and its application.

2025 Timeline

23 December 2024 Open for nominations from the RES Membership.

30 May 2025 – Closed to nominations from the RES Membership.

July 2025 – Review and shortlisting of nominees by Membership Committee and final selections made by RES Council.

The diversity, research areas, and backgrounds of the nominees will be considered to ensure a balanced and representative cohort of Honorary Fellows each year.

August 2025 – Nominators and nominees of the final selections will be notified and asked to complete a professional disclosure form

9 September 2025 – New Honorary Fellows are announced to the Membership at the Annual General Meeting 2025.

Individuals who are selected to be awarded lifelong Honorary Fellowship will receive a certificate, and they will be celebrated at the AGM, in Antenna and on the RES website.

Eligibility

  • Honorary Fellowship recognises individuals who have made exceptional and sustained contributions to the field of insect science, whether through research, education, application, public engagement, or leadership.
  • Nominees may come from diverse backgrounds, including academia, industry, policy, conservation, and outreach, reflecting the broad impact of entomology worldwide.
  • The nominator providing the primary letter of recommendation should be a Member or Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.
  • Nominees themselves do not need to be a current Members or Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society but must demonstrate significant achievements and influence within the field.
  • Nominators should consider candidates whose work has elevated the understanding, appreciation, and application of insect science on a national or international scale.

To Nominate

Nominations for the Honorary Fellowship must include:

  1. Letter of Recommendation: Each nomination should include a primary letter of recommendation from a RES Member or Fellow, limited to a maximum of two pages.
  2. Supporting Letters: Nominations must be accompanied by three letters of support, with each letter not exceeding two pages (Supporters are not required to be RES Members or Fellows).

Guidance for Writing a Letter of Recommendation or Supporting Letter for Honorary Fellowship (Hon.FRES)

The letter of recommendation is a crucial part of the nomination process for Honorary Fellowship. It should provide a compelling case for the nominee’s eligibility, highlighting their significant contributions to insect science. Below are the key points to include:

1. Introduction
  • Clearly state your name, affiliation, and relationship to the nominee.
  • The Letter of Recommendation must be written and submitted by a RES Member or Fellow
  • Supporting Letters can be provided anyone who is in support of the nomination. Membership not a pre-requisite
  • Explain why you are recommending the nominee for Honorary Fellowship.
2. Overview of Contributions
  • Summarise the nominee’s key achievements in entomology, including their research, education, application, or outreach.
  • Highlight the impact of their work in entomology, locally, nationally, or internationally.
3. Alignment with Hon.FRES Criteria
  • Provide evidence of the nominee’s sustained and exceptional contributions to entomology.
  • Address specific qualities or achievements that make the nominee stand out, such as innovation, leadership, public engagement, or advocacy for the discipline.
4. Diversity of Contributions
  • Discuss the nominee’s contributions across different sectors or disciplines (e.g., academia, industry, conservation, policy).
  • Highlight any efforts to promote diversity, sustainability, or public understanding of entomology.
5. Broader Impact
  • Provide examples of how the nominee’s work has influenced the field, benefited society, or inspired others.
  • Mention any significant awards, recognitions, or roles that underscore their achievements.
