Illuminating Central Europe’s unknown insect diversity

Ralph Peters is currently Head of the GBOL III: Dark Taxa project and Head of Hymenoptera section at the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB), Museum Koenig Bonn.

His main interests are the evolutionary history of Hymenoptera and the taxonomy, biology and evolution of the parasitoid wasps. Ralph tackles these research interests with an interdisciplinary and integrative approach, using morphology, behaviour and field biology, DNA barcoding, taxonomics, phylogenomics and comperative genomics. His work often moves into methods or non-Hymenoptera insect groups, but his heart will always be with those stunning and beautiful little parasitoids!

GBOL III: Dark Taxa

For the overall goal of illuminating biodiversity, shedding light on ‘Dark Taxa‘ is key. Taxonomy delimits, describes and characterizes species and is a crucial component in this context. Modern integrative taxonomy needs morphology, DNA barcodes, genomes, life histories, and new researchers that continue tackling the overall goal with a deep understanding of organisms, methods, evolution and species concepts.

GBOL III: Dark Taxa is a taxonomy and a barcoding initiative, the first of its kind, focusing solely on the understudied or unknown part of biodiversity. The project targets the Central-European fauna but its concept of can be transferred to other regions and faunae.
