Daneway Banks is a nature reserve co-owned by the Royal Entomological Society and Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, renowned for its large blue butterflies and recently featured in the third episode of Sir David Attenborough’s new BBC series, Wild Isles.

Sunday’s episode of Wild Isles will show the nature reserve’s work to reintroduce the once-extinct butterfly.

The RES is excited to partner with the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland on this joint meeting – a new venture to bring different interests together regarding conservation management for plants and invertebrates.

The Large Blue butterfly should be in flight and it will form one aspect of the excursion. Other invertebrates of interest include the Rugged Oil Beetle and Pearl-bordered Fritillary.

Plants of interest include Anacamptis morio (Green-winged Orchid), Prunella laciniata (Cut-leaved Selfheal) and Galium pumilum (Slender Bedstraw).

Numbers for this trip are limited to 15 members from each society, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. There is a small charge of £40.00 to cover planning, hall hire, lunch, and transport. Daneway is a sloping reserve and suitable for those with good mobility, as it’s steep in places and there are gates and stiles.

Three short talks will be followed by a simple lunch and a 3-hour trip to the Royal Entomological Society Nature Reserve at Daneway Banks.
